The ancient Hawaiians (the originators of Pono & its practice) lived in a world that was essentially tiny bits of land surrounded by a vast expanse of ocean. Theirs was an island culture, and their language reflects their worldview.

They used a phrase he wai e ola referring to 'the waters of life', expressing their understanding that life is not static. It's dynamic, fluid, a constantly changing, huge, overpowering & awesome force. An island people, they understood that you really cannot live for any extended time out on the ocean. You can surf out there, swim out there, & be okay for a brief period of time, but unless you've got a canoe, a good solid boat underneath you, you cannot hope to survive indefinitely in the ocean. It's just too big.

They felt life was like the ocean that made up their world - just too big, variable & unpredictable to survive in without a canoe. That's why they say, when you're in Pono, you're 'in da canoe'. Then they passed down a legacy of simple, pragmatic practices that - when applied! - will put you back in the canoe.

The 'when applied' part, they call ka hana, the practice. Ka Hana Pono, the practice of Pono, or translated another way, the work of Pono - meaning to stay in Pono you gotta work it. These two new discussion avenues are designed to help us all help each other work it. Hop into 'da canoe' & join your fellow voyagers on this Great Spiritual Journey of Life.
